Ysgol Dewi Sant Lesotho Links

St. Davids community has been twinned with Matsieng in Lesotho since 1999. Following a visit of the City Council, and pupils from Ysgol Dewi Sant to Matsieng in 2014 we became officially linked with Mahloenyeng High School.lesotho

The School is extremely proud of its connection with Lesotho and we intend to continue strengthening our links between St Davids and both of the schools in Matsieng.
The St Davids Matsieng Support Group has for a number of years been raising funds for students who are orphans of aids, the disease which has had such a dreadful impact in Lesotho.
In January 2015 the St Davids Matsieng Support Group received a prestigious award for its work in promoting links between Wales and Africa.
The chairman Chris Taylor, Ysgol Dewi Sant headteacher David Haynes and students Raven Alam and Lorna McEvoy travelled to the Senedd to attend a ceremony hosted by the First Minister, Carwyn Jones.
The Gold Star Learning Link Award is the third to have been awarded to the St Davids Group, and a recognition of the progress that St Davids is making in building up links with its twinned community of Matsieng in Lesotho.
Mr Jones said he was deeply proud of what had been achieved, and that the awards recognised the lengths to which organisations had gone to improve the lives of people both in Africa and Wales.
A school Lesotho committee is now formed and we now celebrate “Moshoeshoe Day” on March 11th to commemorate the death of the Country’s founder.
This year following an assembly for World Toilet Day it was decided to raise money to improve sanitation at our link school. Cake sales, a coffee morning and a lent lunch followed.
However this year in Lesotho the rains have come too late for the food crops and the whole country is suffering from the drought. We have diverted our fundraising to this cause. After watching an S4C documentary on the drought, pupils in Year 7, 8 and 9 planned fundraising events which culminated in a Fundraising day on July 15th and which raised substantial funds.
Next year we hope to continue fundraising and developing links between the two schools.
